Sweet Dreams Are Made of These

The spirits were high at gallery openings across the city over the weekend—in fact, the spirits were flowing, what with the vodka sponsorship on 14th Street. But after talking with artists and dealers, my understanding is that the market for art in the District has cooled. Waiting lists and sell-out shows seem not to be a feature of this market, this season.

Pumpkin ale: acquired! Texas football: watched! Art: seen! All in all, a banner weekend.

I watched the second half of the UCF-Texas game. The Longhorns almost let that one slip away!

In other words, GO GATORS!

Look, I've lived in Central Florida. Of course they're going to be hyped to play in a new stadium. Orlando? Are you kidding? That's the biggest thing that's happened in that town since the downtown Denny's opened its second smoking wing.

Gators lost, what, 20 players at the end of last year? From one young team to another: It won't hold.

I've lived in Central Florida too--spent nearly all my first twenty-five years there--so crack on it all you want. I'll be laughing there with you.

I about had a heart attack when you wrote "Gators lost...." Sure, they're not the same team they were last year. (Let's not even talk about the basketball squad.) And they may make it through the season with, say, two losses. But we've seen a few upsets three weeks into the season, and some mighty teams have fallen. No one thought the Gators would have ended up in the title game last year. No one thought they'd stand up against the Buckeyes. And even after giving up a touchdown on the opening kickoff of that game, they came back and methodically squashed Ohio State.

But I'm seriously digressing here. Come September, it's hard to know where my loyalties are: Do I spent the afternoon in Chelsea looking at the best in contemporary art, or should I be in front of a television (or a computer--God bless ESPN 360)?
