Herb White, RIP

My tribute to Herb White is now on newsstands and, while you can read about his rather remarkable life online, I recommend that you grab a physical copy of the paper if you're able. City Paper art director Pete Morelewicz did a wonderful job putting together a map of the city with pinpoints linking to blurbs showing, location by location, the span of White's influence on the District. I'm grateful that he didn't say "No wtf" when I asked him for "map maybe with bubbles lol".

It was affecting to write an observation about a man I've never met, especially given how many people tracked me down to say some words of respect about the man for the record.
Consider dropping by DCAC on July 3, which the city is recognizing as Herb White Day. Councilmember Jim Graham speaks about White here.

Herb White's daughter singlehandedly forced 7 rent-paying hard working low income immigrant families from their homes in washington dc. It is possible he was not aware of what his daughter was doing with the building he gave her, but she certainly invoked his name and used his money and position to get what she wanted: a "whiter" property, indeed. Promoting art is glorious. promoting human rights might have been nice as well.

Get your facts straight before judging someone's character.

stella, that is a bold and unsupported accusation, and it seems misplaced here. I will not delete your comment, but please don't use this thread to advance an unrelated agenda.

neither bold, nor unsupported, it simply happened. we are responsible for all of our actions, and are capable of good (supporting the arts) and not good (permitting family, name and position to force out tenants from a property.). it seems quite a well placed addition to an article that canonized an individual. thought you might want the whole picture. feel free to delete.

I won't delete it. I called your comment bold because you refer to White's daughter in a thread about Herb White; I called it unsupported because it was. I don't think this thread is the place to hash out the facts of that: There are community forums, city bureaus, etc., that would be an appropriate venue for your complaint. But I only delete comments in rare circumstances.
