What awful news—Eastern Market burned down! This is truly sad news, right as spring was hitting its stride.
Posted by Kriston at April 30, 2007 8:17 AMOh no! Catherine and I had wanted to go there this summer. A sad reminder that if you want to do something, you shouldn't wait, I guess.
Posted by: Becks at April 30, 2007 10:15 AMSad news, another historic structure possibly gone forever. Its sister market at 7th & O has been in limbo, exterior walls propped up with steel supports since a roof collapse in 2003.
Posted by: at April 30, 2007 10:54 AMIt's not all bad: the craft area was mostly spared. You'll still be able to get all the beads, armoirs and stupidly-decorated mirrors that're necessary for a successful grilling season.
Posted by: tom at April 30, 2007 11:08 AMI didn't want to admit it, but that was my first thought on hearing the news. Where the hell am I supposed to get brisket? Does Whole Foods have a saw to cut the chine bone?
Posted by: Kriston at April 30, 2007 11:16 AMI knew DC would not be the same when I move back there :(. Maybe this will be a push for the city to get one solid market for each neihgbourhood; we have far too few comparing to, say, London. Btw, I am off to see DC's own illustrious Mark Jenkins show at a gallery in Soho here.
