Jiha Moon, Place for Sib-Jang-Saeng II, 2004.
Congratulations are in order for Atlanta-based painter Jiha Moon, who's having a hell of a year: Curator's Office recently announced that the Hirshhorn acquired two of Moon's works (including the one shown above). Her work is currently showing in "Asian American Art Now" at the Blaffer Gallery at the Art Museum of the University of Houston. GlassTire recommends that y'all see it, so hop to.
Posted by Kriston at January 23, 2007 5:14 PMMan, how long have you been waiting to use that headline?
Posted by: Sommer at January 23, 2007 5:53 PMI had a strong, unhappy reaction to this painting.
It's what I imagine discarded monster condoms would look like if spun around in a mass. I don't know what circumstance would cause that to happen though.
I would hate if someone said this to me about something I had created. I wouldn't write it down if I didn't think that I just perfectly articulated why I am repulsed by it. It's rare for me (articulation not repulsion)
Posted by: Josie at January 24, 2007 12:10 AMI love this one though http://www.curatorsoffice.com/gallery/moon/moon7.htm
Posted by: Josie at January 24, 2007 12:13 AMJosie..consider it a positive that you GOT a reaction. That is something when a painter can stir some passion in the viewer. I think her paintings are "dope". Psychedelic trippy and rooted in traditional vernacular. It would be great to see her get some bread and broader attention for larger pieces.
Posted by: chris lee at January 24, 2007 10:07 AMThis color combination clearly signifies Play-Doh.
Posted by: Ian at January 24, 2007 10:52 AMHey, Kriston
Thank you for the post. Lily just sent me a link and it is interesting to know what people think of this painting. I have even funnier story on this painting that I wnated to share.(So condom moster is not the first time!)
When I fisrt made this painting I had a chance to show this work some unknown gallery in McLean. It was really odd and bad location right next to seven eleven.(Sorry, can't descive better than this.) The owner there hired the juges to pick the works, so she doesn't nessaserily like my work. In fact, she hated this work so much and said it directly to my face, when I delivered the work. "This painitng burns my eyes, so obnoctios. Who would like to look at this and who would want this painting!" I was mad and mad and mad that night, couldn't sleep. But,it is good old, funny story now.(I certainly don't wnat to burn someones eyes with my work, you know!)
This work opened up so many possibilities for me later works. I am glad that I tried out this one and got to finish.
I want to sahe some back ground of this work,if you don't mind.
This painting call "Place for SibJangSang", and painted rainbow strip silk, which is used for many traditional ceremonies in Korea. SibJangSeang is collectives of animals and nature that present Longivity, happyniess and all the good spirit for family.(deer, pine tree, turtle...) People loved these guys so much and decorated their houses with SibJangSeang painitngs and it became popular subject matter for a long time both for royal family and regular people(like coca cola). Well, I wanted to take all those good things out of traditional painting, played with colors and abstraction to make nonsense Utopia.(I play with the idea of absence a lot at that time)
Anyway, that is the story.
I hope this give your readers a bit more clue on this work. I don't mind condom moster or play doh.
Thank you for listening!
Jiha is lying, of course. She really does want to burn peoples' eyes out of their sockets.
Sommer, I love your take on that painting. "Monster Condoms" is actually a pretty cool way to think of it. That painting was in my foyer for a good while and it always kind of creeped me out too. Jiha deliberately tries to unbalance the viewer with off-kilter composition and color choices in some of her work. You would think it's a cheerful painting because it's very bright- but the effect is very unsettling and a little bit frightening. That sort of duality is at the heart of what she does.
I have an inside line on this character- (she's my wife) Is it wrong to write about her? Is this NEPOTISM? (I need to check with Jessica Dawson)at any rate, Jiha is steady wrecking shit in her studio. She only leaves to eat and sleep. The majority of what she does nowadays won't ever be seen in DC, because she's showing all over the world now.

Jiha is kicking so much ass. She's going to be irritated with me that I wrote about her, but who cares.
