OK, I'm embarrassed to have missed this glaring item in the same Armavirumque post I mentioned below:
Had Britain had the courage to face down Gandhi and his rabble a few years longer, the tragedy that was the partititon of India might have been avoided. [emphasis added]Gandhi! One presumes here that our neocolonialist correspondent would avoid that tragedy by having India remain subordinate to the U.K.
Gandhi—rabble!
Posted by Kriston at May 11, 2005 4:43 PMI think you can be forgiven for missing that. I'm pretty sure I stopped reading after I got to this:
As for colonialism, this third-world feminist of color should get down on her knees and thank Siva that her country was the beneficiary of British colonialism. Without it, she would never have heard of feminism or even of the third world, since the very concept depends upon the freedom, education, and language that the West brought to savages countries in the 18th and 19th centuries.
(Robble-robble.)

Posted by: matty at May 11, 2005 5:44 PMWell, Kimball's not a lightweight. He's sloppy yet too smart to get away with half of what he does; though he takes so poorly to the blog format that I probably ought to cut him some slack on the short-format stuff. But in general: Armavirumque is a group blog by the writers of the New Criterion, which I think is the bellwether of conservative cultural commentary. James Panero is a very good Armavirumque blogger, who has a good sense of humor and my respect.
Posted by: Kriston at May 12, 2005 12:04 AMInteresting. I didn't realize that the word rabble was actually used by anyone other than third-rate movie villains.
