music makes the atmosphere so fine, 'specially when you got a cold glass of wine

So I’ve been doing the random ten thing, which is lame, but I can’t seem to stop. And then I make it worse by fretting over what comes up. So here goes:

Tom Waits, “Falling Down”
Hayden, “Dynamite Walls”
The Exploding Hearts, “Rumors in Town”
Joe Jackson, “Is She Really Going Out with Him?”
Van Morrison, “Jackie Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven When You Smile)”
Sly and the Family Stone, “Spaced Cowboy”
Meryn Cadell, “The Sweater”
Tom Waits, “Singapore”
Yo La Tengo, “Tears Are in Your Eyes”
Cub, “Secret Nothing”

Eh, Tom Waits. So boring. I’m not even really sure who or what Hayden is – it’s one of those songs that just mysteriously appeared on the hard drive due to the SO’s iPod obsession. I totally disown “The Sweater” (also hers), though the guitar sound isn’t bad. It sounds like a Molly Shannon skit turned into a song, though (Cadell even enunciates a little like Shannon.) Not keen on the Yo La Tengo, either, but then the only record by them I’ve ever really liked was Fakebook. Most of the rest listed just make me feel old.

Apparently I found Hayden when searching for a definition and example of EMU and downloaded this much too long gem.

Good article here

Always amazes that you get all this hidden music on shuffle and I get (on the same computer) enless cuts by Ray Charles and the Shitbirds.

But Ray Charles rules. And so do the Shitbirds.

No disrespect to Ray Charles or the Shitbirds - but out of every 10 songs on shuffle, at least 3 are from Ray Charles or the Shitbirds! Hundreds of artists to choose from and it gets stuck on these two. I have no idea what heuristics iTunes/iPod uses for shuffle mode - but there has to be something better out there.

Well, there is an awful lot of Ray Charles on there. But at least the Shitbirds songs are short - I think their longest one is less than 2:30. And several are less than one minute. Faster and shorter, that's their credo.
