iPost

New blog game: The idea is to shuffle your iTunes music library and write down the first 10 songs that come up, and entertainment ensues. Just in time for payola the iShuffle!

  1. The Decembrists, A Cautionary Song
  2. Los Lonely Boys, Hollywood
  3. Alabama, Fiddle in the Band
  4. Public Enemy, Terminator X to the Edge of Panic
  5. Elvis Costello, Talking in the Dark
  6. Pedro the Lion, Priests and Paramedics
  7. Joni Mitchell, Blue
  8. Miles Davis, Freddie the Freeloader
  9. Tom Waits, Jersey Girl
  10. Frank Sinatra, Come Dance With Me
Not the mix tape I'd make—Joni Mitchell? Sinatra? What the hell? Now Alabama, there's a keeper—but nothing terribly embarrassing, or at least not representative of the terrible amount of emo and its hardcore variants I collected through college. insurgent.muse has already convinced herself that the iShuffle is another irresistable component of her iDentity, but I need the perfect intersection of the market and Friday blogosphere boredom to get me there.

Hmm. Lots of Pedro the Lion in these lists so far. iTunes conspiracy?

As a Christmas bonus everyone at Apple is getting a free, 1GB iPod shuffle. Sometimes it pays to work for the man.

You should play around with making Smart-Smart Playlists. What you do is create multiple Smart Playlists with selection criteria that divide your music collection into important segments (New stuff, Most listened to, New stuff that isn't on the Most Listened to list, Only BeeGee's songs that end in Q, etc) Then you make secondary Smart playlists that include the previous playlists, and you use the Autofill option on the new iTunes to create custom proportional playlists. A little of this and a little of that.

And I get a free Shuffle

My favorie smart playlist is "Long Lost Friends". I put in 3 or above stars and not played in the last month. Also, in order to make sure things aren't stale, I put "Last played: not in the last day" on every smart list I make. It keeps the rotation going. Other good lists I have are Good vs. Evil (with keywords good and evil in title), Love, ultimate cheese (with cheesy song in the comments section), Instrumental (with inst in comments), and state songs (with state names in the titles).
