And here’s a question: Freedom of the press, as it exists today (and didn’t exist, really, until the 1960s) is unlikely to survive if a majority — or even a large and angry minority — of Americans comes to conclude that the press is untrustworthy and unpatriotic. How far are we from that point?I don't know—pretty fucking far?
This guy is for real?
Posted by Kriston at May 26, 2004 2:36 PMi know. glenn is crazy. i feel like behind every post like this of his is an implied threat: "you better fucking watch what you say, hippie, or we're going to kill you all!" or something like that.
Posted by: catherine at May 26, 2004 3:03 PMThat's nonsense. But then he doesn't answer his own question.
The media is under such massive fact-checking by every pimply-faced kid with a blog that I don't think we have to worry much about "untrustworthy" news outlets getting away with anything.
And since when was it the responsibility of journalists to be patriotic? And WTF does that mean in this context anyway? You think Dan Rather or Christianne Amanpour, having consumed the right amount of tequila, wouldn't bitchslap the first foreigner who said we deserved 9/11? It is there JOB to put the government and its policies under scrutiny.
There's certainly bias, but I wouldn't start throwing around words like "unpatriotic". --s
